A Short Story | Inspired by Panchtatra

Written by 'Kant'

Once upon a time far from the banks of river ganges, flowing towards the tributaries of Zuari river, a beautiful mangrove was creates by Nature. For eighteen long monsoons, six monkeys ruled the Mango Grove, swinging from branch to branch like self-appointed philosophers of the canopy. Over time, however, they mistook the jungle for their private banyan tree. Petty squabbles erupted, bananas flew, and rival monkeys spent more energy scratching each other than tending the forest. Animals quietly drifted away.
Then arrived a clever dog who had roamed with wolves beyond the hills. He repaired nests, organised moonlit festivals, befriended lions and tigers, and breathed life into the fading grove. The monkeys boycotted every celebration, hurled coconuts and insults, and howled predictions of doom. Yet the jungle flourished. Finally, the dog’s team escorted the six disgruntled primates beyond the forest edge. The grove prospered, while distant echoes of monkey chatter became little more than background music for happier times.
