ExploreMELANGE was conceived as a space for reflective writing—where literature, ideas, memory, and civilisational inquiry meet without the compulsions of immediacy or polemic. It is therefore fitting that we introduce, in the coming issues, a curated series of essays drawn from the recently published book Theory of India.
These essays belong to a long-form civilisational conversation. They resist reducing India to a political event of the twentieth century or to inherited administrative frameworks, and instead ask a more fundamental question: what is India as an idea, a society, and a living civilisation?
Over the next 31 issues of MELANGE, this series will explore India through history, philosophy, culture, governance, and democracy. It argues that India is best understood not as a static nation-state, but as an evolving civilisational organism—shaped by continuity as much as change.
We invite our readers to approach these writings not as definitive answers, but as provocations for thought. To read them is to participate in an act of citizenship—one that values understanding over reaction, dialogue over dogma, and depth over immediacy.
Welcome to the fourth edition of Mélange
With each issue, this webzine continues to evolve—sometimes through abundance, sometimes through restraint. This edition arrives with fewer pieces than usual, yet each one stands firm in its own light, shaped with care and conviction.
The writings you will encounter here do not rely on numbers for their strength. Each piece glows by its own merit—through clarity of thought, sincerity of voice, and the quiet confidence of expression.
As always, Mélange remains a meeting place for ideas and imaginations, where language is trusted to speak for itself and where every voice is given the space it deserves.
Thank you for continuing this journey with us. Your readership gives purpose to these pages and keeps Mélange alive.
With warmth,
Somnath Sarkar
